Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Assault

Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006, bringing a major New York chapter of his nine-year legal saga to a close after an overturned conviction and two subsequent mistrials.

Weinstein was originally convicted in 2020 of the criminal sexual act against Haley, alongside a rape conviction involving actress Jessica Mann, and was sentenced to 23 years in prison. That conviction was overturned by the New York State Court of Appeals in April 2024, prompting a new trial.

In the 2025 retrial, a jury again found Weinstein guilty of the criminal sexual act against Haley, while clearing him of a separate charge involving former model Kaja Sokola. Jurors were unable to reach a verdict on the charge related to Mann, resulting in a mistrial; prosecutors later dropped that charge after Mann indicated she did not wish to testify again, clearing the way for Wednesday’s sentencing.

What Happened

Haley, a former production assistant on the Weinstein-produced series “Project Runway,” testified that Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her at his SoHo apartment in July 2006 after she told him no. She has now testified against Weinstein across two separate trials.

What Was Said in Court

Appearing in court in a wheelchair, Weinstein addressed the judge directly, expressing remorse specifically toward Haley and apologizing to anyone he may have hurt through his actions, while continuing to maintain his overall innocence and describing himself as confused about the nature of his encounters with his accusers. Haley delivered a victim impact statement describing the toll the assault and the years of subsequent legal proceedings have taken on her life and sense of security, telling the court she hoped it would be the final such statement she’d need to give.

Judge Curtis Farber was pointed in his remarks, telling Weinstein that his legacy could have been cemented in greatness but that he threw it away through his actions, and describing him as having become the literal face of the #MeToo movement rather than being remembered solely for his filmmaking career. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg thanked Haley and the other survivors who came forward, describing their courage during what he called a difficult process.

What Comes Next

Weinstein still faces resentencing in California, related to a 2013 case in which he was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting an Italian model and actor at a Los Angeles hotel. It will be up to a California court to determine whether that sentence runs concurrently with or consecutively to his New York sentence; no date has been set for that proceeding. Weinstein’s representative said he intends to continue pursuing his legal rights and to challenge both the conviction and the sentence through the appeals process.

Why It Matters

The sentencing marks one of the most significant closing chapters in a case that helped ignite the global #MeToo movement in 2017, when dozens of women came forward with allegations against Weinstein. More than 80 women in total have accused him of sexual misconduct over the years, though this case centred specifically on the criminal charge involving Haley.
