NorthEast United are all set to complete the signing of Moroccan defender Hamza Regragui to bolster their attack ahead of the Kalinga Super Cup. The Highlanders have offered the defender a deal until 2025, and the player is set to sign the contract to soon become a new player available for the upcoming tournament.
The 26-year-old becomes the latest foreigner to join the club, and will sign for free after terminating his contract with former club Wyhad AC. Regragui has made a name for himself as a ball playing central defender and could add a new dimension to the team once he is on the pitch.
An official announcement is pending from the club, which will be made once he has completed all the formalities ahead of the transfer.
Hamza Regragui to sign for NorthEast United until 2025
The player started his career in Morocco for AM Football before moving to Malaga’s youth team in 2015. Only one year later, he returned to his home country to sign for Kenitra before returning to AM Football. After spending six years with Berkane, he moved to Wyhad whom he has now left to make the move to India.
Hamza Regragui succeeded with Berkane, winning three Moroccan Cups, two CAF Confederation Cups and one CAF Super Cup during his time with them.
Question marks have been cast over the future of Michel Zabaco, with the arrival of Regragui due to the foreign spots available to ISL clubs. Since more foreigners will be available during the Super Cup, it seems likely that both will stay for January but Zabaco could leave now that the Highlanders have a new central defender.
Yaser Hamed will be away for national team duty this month as he participates in the AFC Asian Cup, and his return will bring about all sorts of questions over the squad composition.
