Rebuilt, Not Just Remastered

Unlike 2011’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary—which overlaid new graphics on the original engine—Campaign Evolved is a complete remake in Unreal Engine 5. Every asset, environment, and character model has been rebuilt with 4K visuals, updated animations, remastered music, and re-recorded voice lines from the original cast.

The campaign preserves the core story while adding three brand-new prequel missions exploring events before the Master Chief crash-landed on Installation 04. These bonus missions feature new environments, enemies, and character moments that deepen the lore without altering the original narrative.

Four-Player Co-op Across Platforms

For the first time in Halo history, four players can experience the campaign together online across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5 with full cross-play and shared progression. Console players retain the classic two-player split-screen experience, perfect for couch co-op nostalgia.

The expanded player count required tweaks to enemy encounters and level design—including a hilariously tiny fourth seat added to the Warthog. Players can disable sprinting (a controversial modern addition) to maintain the original’s slower, deliberate pace.

Expanded Arsenal and Vehicles

Beyond the original weapons, Campaign Evolved introduces nine iconic series weapons: Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, Needle Rifle, Fuel Rod Cannon, and Sentinel Beam are now pickable. Vehicle hijacking—introduced in Halo 2—lets players commandeer enemy rides, including the previously un-drivable Covenant Wraith tank.

Optional “Skulls” modifiers add replayability by changing combat rules in fun and challenging ways. Improved wayfinding and encounter pacing address criticisms of missions like The Library, which historically dragged.

Historic PlayStation Debut

Halo’s arrival on PlayStation 5 symbolically ends the “console wars.” Community director Brian Jarrard stated: “We’re super excited to welcome even more players to the franchise we loved, to fall in love with Halo the same way we all did 24 years ago.” The game will be available day one on Game Pass for Xbox users.
