Haiwaan Box Office: Akshay Kumar-Saif Ali Khan Film Shuts Shop in 2 Weeks, Ends Below ₹10 Crore Net

Haiwaan, reuniting Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan on screen for the first time since 2008’s Tashan, has wrapped up its theatrical run after just two weeks, closing with a domestic net collection below ₹10 crore, according to trade tracker Sacnilk. The Priyadarshan-directed thriller has been widely described in trade reports as one of the most disastrous outings ever for a film led by two established Bollywood stars.

A Disastrous Run From Day One

Haiwaan opened weakly, collecting just ₹3 crore net in India on its first day across more than 7,000 shows, a figure trade reports described as the lowest opening for any Akshay Kumar-Priyadarshan collaboration. Rather than building over the weekend, as is typical for major star-led releases, collections actually fell on Saturday, with the film managing only around ₹2.50 crore net that day. By the end of its opening weekend, the film had collected a net total of ₹7.35 crore, struggling to even cross the ₹10 crore mark that most major Bollywood releases clear within a single day.

Collections continued to slide through the first week, with the film’s total net standing between ₹8.75 crore and ₹9.85 crore by Day 7, depending on the tracker. According to Koimoi’s closing report, Haiwaan ultimately wrapped its run at ₹9.92 crore net in India, exiting cinemas within just two weeks of release.

How Big Was the Shortfall?

Reported budget figures for Haiwaan vary significantly across sources, ranging from around ₹70-80 crore to as high as ₹130-150 crore. Even using the more conservative estimates, the film’s final domestic net collection represents only a small fraction of its production cost. Koimoi, working off a ₹130 crore budget figure, calculated the film recovered just 7.63% of its cost, a deficit of more than 92%. Other trackers citing a ₹150 crore budget put its recovery rate at closer to 10%, based on worldwide gross collections.

Whichever budget figure is accurate, the film’s closing numbers make it one of the steepest box office failures in recent memory for a film headlined by two A-list Bollywood stars.

Facing Stiff Competition

Haiwaan’s struggles weren’t helped by timing. The film opened alongside strong holdover performances from Hanuman Ansh, which was still drawing crowds well into its later weeks of release, and Mirzapur: The Movie, both of which left little room at the box office for a new release to gain traction. Industry trackers noted that Haiwaan’s occupancy rates hovered around just 11% in its opening days, reflecting the muted audience turnout.

About the Film

Directed by Priyadarshan, Haiwaan is a remake of his own 2016 Malayalam thriller Oppam, which starred Mohanlal and was itself a box office success on a considerably smaller budget. In this Hindi version, Saif Ali Khan plays Shyam, a visually impaired building maintenance manager and martial artist who becomes the protector of a judge’s daughter, while Akshay Kumar plays Parshuram, a ruthless killer targeting the family. The film also stars Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar, with Mohanlal reportedly featuring in a cameo role.
