As we head into the final stretch of a thrilling season so far, the league’s best (and worst) finishers will make all the difference for teams looking for a successful season.
Net World Sports has crunched the numbers on the Premier League to uncover this season’s biggest xG (expected goals) over & underperformers:
Key Findings – Haaland’s wasteful finishing could give Liverpool the upper hand in the Premier League title race
- Tottenham’s Son Heung Min is ranked as the Premier League’s most clinical finisher, exceeding his xG by 5.3. His goal makes up for Timo Werner (-0.5) and Brennan Johnson (-1.70) who are struggling to convert their chances.
- Despite leading the race for the Golden Boot, Haaland ranks among the most wasteful strikers in the league. Currently, on 18 goals this season, his xG suggests he should be on 20.8 meaning he is underperforming by -2.6 compared to last season when he was overperforming by 1.57.
- Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin ranks as the Premier League’s least clinical finisher, underperforming his xG by -6.2. Dyches’s side has only scored 29 goals this season despite having an xG of 40.7 which is the tenth-best in the league.
- Diogo Jota is Liverpool’s biggest overperformer in front of goal surpassing his projected total by 4.6 highlighting how much of a loss he will be for Jurgen Klopp. Darwin Nunez (-2.2) and Luis Diaz (-2.0) will have to improve their poor finishing if they are to fill the gap left by Jota.
