Antoine Griezmann’s future at Barcelona is currently up in the air. The player has a running contract and is not obliged to negotiate a new deal or talk to the club to reduce his salary.
Barcelona is currently in a complicated financial situation and needs to reduce their wage bill to re-sign Lionel Messi, who is currently a free agent. Griezmann cannot be involved in a swap deal either, without him personally giving the green light for the move. And as of right now, Barcelona has made absolutely no contact with the player regarding the situation.
The club’s director of football, Mateu Alemany has indicated that they would accept potential offers for the forward if they arrive.
“[Griezmann] is a player who has his market, with clubs interested in him, and we are building the squad looking for a financial balance,” Alemany said.
“We have no problem with Antoine, we are delighted with him.
“But if the market moves, we are open to all the proposals that are presented because we are in a delicate moment in which we have to find a balance with the financial fair play and that is why we must talk to all the players so that it does not harm them or, at least, it does for the shortest possible time.
“We are making these balances and we are open to all the options that can be given in the market, but none that would harm a competitive team.”
Other players like Ousmane Dembele, Miralem Pjanic, Samuel Umtiti and Philippe Coutinho are also expected to be on their way out of the club. For the time being, Griezmann is a Barcelona player, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to stay that way for a long time.
