The ISL 2020/21 winners Mumbai City FC have got a huge boost as the best player of the latest ISL season, the 32-year-old Scottish forward Greg Stewart, has reportedly moved to the Islanders.

Mumbai City FC, who recently created history in the AFC Champions League by becoming the first Indian club to win a group stage match, had a tough time in the ISL 2021/22 season as the defending champions.

Struggling ISL 2021/22 for Mumbai City

Though the defending champions had almost a flying start in that ISL season with the five wins in the first six games, they later failed to win in the nine consecutive matches. Despite their late comeback in that competition, the Islanders just failed to qualify for the playoffs by finishing as the fifth-best team in that tournament.

They are surely desperate to bring powerful performances from the beginning of the new season, and Greg Stewart’s addition to the team can hugely help them to achieve their goal.

Though Mumbai City FC or Jamshedpur FC, Stewart’s club in ISL 2021/22 season, both haven’t officially announced anything about this Scottish player, the Indian daily newspaper The Times Of India has recently revealed this big news. According to their report last Wednesday (18th May), the Mumbai-based club has signed Stewart on a two-year deal.

Greg Stewart played a hugely influential role for Jamshedpur FC to achieve their first-ever playoffs qualification in the ISL 2021/22 season. The Red Miners finished on top of the points table in the league stage of the latest ISL season, which also helped them to qualify for the Playoffs for the 2023/24 AFC Champions League group stage.

However, Kerala Blasters handed Jamshedpur FC a defeat in the semi-finals of the ISL 2021/22.

In that entire ISL season, Greg Stewart appeared in 21 games, where he scored 10 goals (including a hat-trick) and also provided 10 assists. At the end of that ISL season, while he was the joint second most goal-scorer, he also finished as the leading assist provider. So, there was no doubt why the Scottish player won the Hero of the League award in his first season in India.

Talking about his incredible stats in the ISL 2021/22, the busy Scottish central forward or attacking midfielder also recorded 61 shots (25 shots on target), 73 crosses and 853 passes (almost 40.62 passes per game) with a passing accuracy of 67.64%.

Mumbai City FC excited on Stewart

Stewart can play a vital role for the Mumbai City FC in the next ISL season. While ISL is likely to be returned in a normal home-and-away format in the upcoming season, the regular Indian football season is likely to be shaped bigger by other matches, including the return of the Super Cup.

If Stewart continues his incredible form of direct involvement in the goals, the Islanders can be a big headache for the other defences.
