Graham Potter is on thin ice once again, following Chelsea’s 2-0 loss against Aston Villa at home. However, while the board continues to back the former Brighton manager, he is now understood to be under pressure.
Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann, who was recently replaced by Thomas Tuchel, is now being considered as a replacement. The 35-year-old is also being scouted by Tottenham, who parted ways with Antonio Conte and are also looking for a new manager.
Graham Potter under high pressure after Aston Villa loss
Before the international break, Chelsea seemed to have finally found the winning formula as they picked up two Premier League wins. They also overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and advance to the quarter finals.
Chelsea are now in the bottom half of the table, at 11th spot. And the likelihood that they will play in any European competition seems unlikely given that they are so far behind with only ten games left.
Nagelsmann is one of the most highly rated young managers in Europe, who has achieved success with Bayern, as well as RB Leipzig. And his availability puts Graham Potter’s job into a crisis, considering that he could also be the long-term option that Todd Boehly is looking for.
However, even he would have difficulty turning things around given that there’s so little time left. There’s also the prospect of the Champions League, and the clash with Real Madrid that awaits them. Winning it would be the only opportunity for them to qualify for the Champions League next season. But given the way they are playing now, it seems unlikely that they will be able to get past Real Madrid.
Chelsea fans have been very vocal about their unhappiness at Graham Potter. And it remains to be seen whether he can turn things around or whether Todd Boehly will finally replace him.
