GPD has launched a new Kickstarter campaign for the GPD Pocket 3, a new handheld computer. Unlike the majority of GPD’s products, this one is designed for both gamers and professionals.
The handheld is a small laptop with an 8-inch 1920 x 1200 screen, a full QWERTY keyboard, and stylus support, as well as a variety of connectivity options, including Thunderbolt 4. The Kickstarter campaign is currently in the prototyping stage, with no word on when production will begin.
The Pocket 3’s purpose is to compress as much utility and versatility into an 8-inch form factor as possible. GPD says it sought to create a new handheld that combined the greatest elements of its earlier Pocket 2 and MicroPC handhelds, as well as its P2 Max ultrabook, into one device. As a result, the Pocket 3 boasts a surprising amount of connection and flexibility, something you don’t often see in small devices.
With an 11th Generation Fundamental i7-1195G7 with Intel Iris Xe graphics, up to 16GB of LPDDR4x-3733 RAM, and up to a single 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD, the core hardware options are fairly powerful. If the Pocket 3 is released, you can also opt for a cheaper option with a Pentium Silver N6000 CPU, 8GB of LPDDR4x-2933 RAM, and a 512GB NVMe SSD, which will presumably be significantly less expensive than the i7 model.
Perhaps the most useful feature of the Pocket 3 is its modular I/O port on the back, which can be configured to provide two highly specialized ports for IT work. The first port is a standard RS-232 communication port that resembles a VGA port but is not to be confused with one. You can use this port to connect to PDAs, scanners, barcode printers, and other devices for troubleshooting and deployment.
The next port is a KVM module, which has both an HDMI In and a USB In port for connecting the Pocket 3 to another computer or server and remotely controlling it. In the IT sector, this could be beneficial if you need direct management over a headless server that doesn’t have a physical keyboard, mouse, or display attached to it.

The Pocket 3 has three USB 3.2 ports and a single HDMI 2.0b port in addition to the very versatile module port. If you choose the high-end model, you’ll also receive a full-fledged Thunderbolt 4 port that can support screens with up to 8K resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate.
If you don’t have a Type C port, you’ll get a Type C port with DisplayPort support for up to 4K 60Hz. For internet access, there’s a single 2.5Gbps ethernet connector at the back. The Pocket 3’s built-in 38.5 WHr battery pack, according to GPD, may provide up to 8.5 hours of battery life on average. It can also charge at 45W and can be charged with power banks if necessary.
