The GPD Win Max 2 is a tiny laptop featuring a 10-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, a backlit keyboard, and built-in game controllers that can be held like an enormous Nintendo DS or Game Boy Advance SP for gaming.
Variants and Pricing of the Laptop
The Win Max 2 is a fully functional gaming PC with the option of AMD Ryzen 7 6800U or Intel Core i7-1260P processors. The GPD Win Max 2, first announced in March, will go on sale this week for $899 and up through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign that will start on July 7 at 10:00 AM Beijing time. It is anticipated to start arriving in September 2022.
However, that starting price only applies to a very small number of configurations. Most backers will probably pay $999 or more in the end. Here is a list of the pricing and configuration choices that will be offered both during and after the crowdfunding campaign:
Configuration | IGG price | Retail price |
6800U + 16GB + 128GB | $899 (only 50 available) | N/A |
6800U + 16GB + 1TB | $999 | $1159 |
1260P + 16GB + 1TB | $999 | $1159 |
6800U + 32GB + 1TB | $1199 | $1359 |
6800U + 32GB + 2TB | $1299 | $1459 |
1TB M.2 2230 SSD add-on | $139 | $145 |
4G LTE module add-on | $79 | $89 |
Only a 128GB SSD is included in the $899 entry-level model, which is an Indiegogo exclusive and not enough capacity for a gaming PC. However, the GPD Win Max 2 offers user-upgradeable storage. The variants mentioned above all come with an M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD, which can be upgraded to a PCIe 4.0 SSD, but a smaller M.2 2230 PCI-E 4.0 socket that may be utilized for extra storage.
The tiny laptop also sports a Thunderbolt 4 port (or USB4 on AMD variants), three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, HDMI 2.1 connections, quad speakers, a 3.5mm audio socket, and a webcam. Other features include a microSD card reader and a full-sized SD card reader.
The computer also contains shoulder triggers, two programmable action buttons, a trackpad between the controllers, a D-Pad, analog sticks, and action buttons on the bottom of the case.
The Win Max 2 is essentially a netbook-sized computer with a keyboard large enough for touch typing and a screen that might be large enough for doing actual work, in contrast to the majority of recent handheld gaming PCs, which are designed primarily for gaming. To give the computer a more polished appearance, GPD even supplies coverings that you can slide over the game controls when not in use.
The device is also one of the few in this class to include an optional 4G LTE module, which will retail for $89 or $79 during the crowdfunding campaign. The module supports both LTE-TDD bands B34/Be38/B39/B40/B41 and LTE-FDD bands B/1/B3/B5/B8.
