[Google](https://www.google.com/) just had its thunder stolen. Hours before the company’s scheduled Android Show presentation, a 16-minute leaked video surfaced showing what appears to be Aluminium OS — Google’s long-rumored desktop operating system.

The leak, shared by Mystic Leaks on Telegram and first reported by Android Authority, offers the most comprehensive look yet at Google’s strategy to bring Android to PCs and directly challenge both Microsoft Windows and its own ChromeOS.

The footage is real, the features are interesting — and the problems are equally visible.

## What Is Google Aluminium OS?

Aluminium OS is not a new operating system built from scratch. Court documents filed in Google’s search antitrust case describe it as “ChromeOS built on the Android stack” — rebuilding ChromeOS’s foundation using Android’s Linux kernel and existing frameworks.

The comprehensive leak reveals Google’s Android-based desktop operating system intended for Googlebook laptops, competing with Windows and macOS.

## What the 16-Minute Video Shows

The leaker walked through everything from initial setup to daily use, revealing an OS that borrows heavily from both Android’s mobile roots and ChromeOS’s desktop sensibilities. Key features visible include a bottom app dock, virtual desktops integrated into the Recents view, compact side-sliding Quick Settings, and a “Link to iOS” app for Apple iPhone connectivity.

The Quick Settings panel pulls in from the side as a compact vertical overlay rather than dropping from the top — a layout better suited to wide displays. The footage also confirms Play Store and Chrome browser extensions appearing in the same environment, with Chrome showing an extensions button alongside the address bar.

The system supports both Intel and MediaTek chips, positioning it for budget laptops and premium devices alike.

## The Honest Problem: Apps Are Not Ready

Here is where the excitement hits a wall. The leaker noted that Google’s Aluminium OS is essentially plain Android optimised for larger screens, with many Google apps appearing as web-wrapped versions rather than native desktop software.

Google can solve the technical merger. The app gap is a developer adoption problem, and a polished taskbar does nothing to close it. Even Google’s own first-party apps — Gmail, Drive, Maps — appear to be website wrappers inside browser windows rather than purpose-built desktop applications. The leaker’s “glorified Samsung DeX” comparison is blunt but not entirely unfair at this stage.

---

## Is This Samsung DeX With a Google Badge?

The comparison is understandable on the surface. Both are Android-based desktop shells with a taskbar, windowed apps, and external display support. But there are meaningful differences: Aluminium OS integrates Gemini AI at the system level, handling multitasking decisions and automating routine tasks. The system reportedly learns workflow patterns and anticipates needs proactively — something DeX has never attempted.

The [Googlebook hardware](https://www.technosports.co.in/) announced alongside this also represents a different commitment level from Samsung’s DeX, which has always been a secondary feature rather than a primary product.

## When Will It Actually Launch?

The timeline from court documents is the most reliable guide available. Commercial trusted testers get access in late 2026, but a full release is not expected until 2028. Enterprise and education — the sectors where Chromebooks have their strongest foothold — are targeted for 2028. A leak in May 2026 does not move those dates.

A Google witness in the antitrust proceedings also confirmed that some existing Chromebook devices will not support Aluminium OS, though no specific chip requirements or estimates were given.

---

## The Bottom Line

Aluminium OS has a genuinely compelling desktop shell — the bottom dock, virtual desktops, and iPhone connectivity show real design intent. But a polished launcher does not make a platform. What Google has been building looks like Android grew up and moved to a bigger screen — which is promising, but unfinished. The app ecosystem question will define whether Aluminium OS becomes a real Windows rival or an expensive ChromeOS rebrand.
