Google Tensor G5 to Feature Imagination GPU, TSMC Manufacturing, and Custom ISP for Pixel 10 Upgrade
Yang Yanling, a postgraduate student, published an article on the integration of RISC-V and Imagination GPUs, presented at the RISC-V Day Tokyo conference in Japan. Imagination Technologies was equally keen to lend its official credence to the claim, re-posting the blog on WeChat. It was reported in the original post that the Tensor G5 chips feature an Imagination GPU only to remove the mentioned table later.
The Imagination Technologies DXT-48-1536 GPU is said to join the Tensor G5, the likely processor in the Google Pixel 10, according to multiple sources. This is quite a significant step up compared to the Arm Mali-G715 in the Tensor G3 and G4, with the addition of ray tracing capabilities being particularly significant. Google will be moving Tensor G5 production to TSMC using a 3nm-class node fabrication as opposed to Samsung’s platform.
Just like with previous models, with hardware built by Samsung and parts designed by Google, the company will still integrate Arm Cortex CPU cores, while developing a custom image signal processor (ISP) as well. Other upgrades in this architecture include a system-level cache, custom memory controller, and power module enhancements. The chipset will also incorporate third-party elements for USB, PCIe, and I3C systems while supporting DSI display, DisplayPort, flash storage, and LPDDR5x memory via external interfaces.
The chipset will also base USB, PCIe, and I3C systems on other manufacturers’ components, while providing external interfaces for DSI display, DisplayPort, flash storage, as well as LPDDR5x memory.
Alongside the Tensor G5 specs, that table also listed a mysterious Xiaomi chipset codenamed “XuanJie” that’s likely to include an Imagination Technologies GPU as well — although we know little else about it. More evidence of the strategic shift Google is taking with the Tensor G5. The transition to an Imagination Technologies GPU, a completely custom ISP, and TSMC manufacturing represents a major leap forward for the Pixel 10 generation, vowing double graphics performance, better camera performance, and more efficiency across the board.
