Google Cancels Pixel Tablet 2 Development, Focus Shifts to Future Models
At first, some assumed that the cancellation referenced a Pixel Tablet 2 or the Pixel Tablet 3. According to some reports, the Pixel Tablet 2 was said to be scrapped third-gen but more in-depth clarification added that alongside the now-ousted device should be a fully-fledged Pixel tablet and not just trimmed bin generation three. This also reflects prior sleeper reports concerning the Pixel Tablet 3 being still early in development, with cancellation not happening yet.
Mishaal Rahman, Senior Editor at Android Authority, has confirmed to the source close to the project that Pixel Tablet 2 is canceled. The source which leaked images of the device over a month ago said Google abandoned the project over fears they could take a financial hit. Android Headlines even more recently dug a little deeper and discovered that the device was related to the Pixel Tablet 2, not a Pixel Tablet 3 as some had thought when it turned up, which has a separate codename of “kiyomi.”
The Pixel Tablet 2 would have likely used the same system-on-chip as the Pixel 9 series and feature a Google Tensor G4 chip, providing even more power. The Pixel Tablet 3, on the other hand, is set to debut in 2027 and will likely feature the more recent Tensor G6 chip. Google is likely just setting up some scheduling and reporting for the Pixel Tablet going forward and since the Pixel Tablet 2 isn’t expected until 2025 it would be unreasonable for Google to develop a third gen while developing a second.
The Pixel Tablet 2 should have also released a Wi-Fi-only and dual-band version as well, including support for 5G, as well as an accompanying official keyboard with a touchpad, to help with productivity. Although the cancellation is disappointing, there’s still speculation that the Pixel Tablet 3 is under development, possibly with features aimed at power users. Future Tablet Developments Reports suggest that Google might merge Chrome OS with Android to better compete with Apple’s iPad, potentially signaling a new direction for Google’s tablet efforts and sparking future innovations.
