Over the past year, Google has made immense improvements and is looking forward to making more to their Meet interface. It is continuing to do so for Gmail and Workspace as well.

Google Meet will now get a ‘Companion Mode’ to provide users a second screen experience as part of their push to make hybrid meetings more equitable.

Google designed Companion Mode in order to seamlessly connect those in a room with their remote teammates, giving everyone advanced features to participate while simultaneously leveraging the best of in-room audio and video conferencing capabilities.

While on the web, users will be able to present, send messages to video call participants, take part in Q&As or polls as such. Users will also be able to raise their hands. Some of the second-screen experiences will also be available on the Nest Hub Max.

Colleagues in the same meeting room together who will enable Companion Mode on their personal devices will be given their own video tile in Meet and this will help them to stay connected with their remote teammates.

Google Meet’s Companion Mode will be available on the web in September and will be available for phones soon.

The Google Meet will also feature another improvement to the Meet experience which lets you specify via an RSVP whether you’re joining a call virtually or in person.

When it comes to the safety front, admins will be able to set policies for who can join meetings. A new moderation control will permit hosts to disable in-meeting chat and presenting during meetings, along with full power to control mute and unmute options of the participants.
