Google files for 4 design patents with a possible under-display camera feature

Not only the Chinese OEMs are looking to invest in future products but also American multinational technology company Google. Recently, we reported that Google has filed for a patent for a design for a fitness tracker that is very similar to Amazon Halo. Now, they have filed a set of new patents whose designs have floated online. These are the designs of smartphones that might be launched by Google in the future. The most amazing point to note in these designs is that there is no front-facing camera.

There were four patents that were filed by the company with the USPTO (United States Patents and Trademarks Office). The model numbers of these four patents are D903,618, D903,619, D903,620, and D903,622. All the four design patent has slight variations but the common and astonishing point is that there is no display cutout for the selfie camera. But, do you expect Google to launch a smartphone without a front-facing camera?

No! Even we do not expect that Google will let go of the selfie camera at an age when it is one of the most attractive features for the buyers. This gives us a hint that there might be an under-display camera present on the front screen. Not only this, we cannot even spot a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. This makes us believe that Google is pondering on an idea to build a smartphone with an under-display camera and an under-display fingerprint sensor. The image above attached is of Google’s design Patent D903,618.

Last month, reports came to the surface that South Korea’s Samsung and China’s Xiaomi are already planning to launch smartphones with no selfie camera but with Under-Display Camera technology. This tweet from the company handle proves that. So, the question is if Google is trying to adapt to new technologies and remain competitive in the smartphone market in the future? Anyway, just like other design patents, it is very difficult to confirm whether these types of smartphones will hit the market but we can believe that the company is trying to innovate to gather a larger market share in the future.
