6 September 2023 was anticipated to mark the release of the Android 14 source code, but it seems that there has been a shift in plans. It appears that Google has informed Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of a delay in the rollout.
All About the Delay in Android 14
Renowned Android expert Mishaal Rahman has reported that OEMs were initially expecting Google to unveil Android 14 today. However, in an unexpected last-minute decision, the tech giant decided to delay the source code release until next month.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rahman reveals that OEMs are now being informed that the details of vulnerabilities outlined in the Android 14 Security Release Notes will be made public on October 4, 2023. Notably, this coincides with the expected launch date of the Pixel 8 series. Consequently, Rahman speculates that Android 14 may actually be introduced on the same day as the Pixel 8.
Should this materialize, it would represent a departure from Google’s past practices, as it would be the first instance of Google rolling out the Android Open Software Project (AOSP) release on the same day as a Pixel product launch. As previously noted in the Android 14 release tracking, there are no assurances against potential delays. Consequently, while everyone initially anticipated that Google would follow a schedule akin to the Android 13 launch and unveil the next Android version in September, a delay would evidently disrupt that projection.
Since Android 14 was originally slated for release this month, several OEMs had previously announced their intentions to launch their respective updates later in September. For instance, OnePlus had declared that Oxygen OS 14 would have a global release date of September 25, 2023, towards the end of last month. Meanwhile, these plans are questionable given the current circumstances. It is plausible that these OEMs may be instructed to postpone their OS launches until Android 14 is officially released in AOSP.
