Google typically uses its annual developers’ conference, Google I/O, to announce major updates to its products and services, such as Android, Google Maps, Search, and its AI-powered virtual assistant. This year, however, the company is doing something different, holding a special event just for Android updates.

Google to Host Special Edition of The Android Show Ahead of Google I/O 2025 with Major Updates
The event, called The Android Show: I/O Edition, will be led by Sameer Samat, Google’s Vice President of Product Management at Android & Play, and is set to take place at 10:30 PM IST on May 13, 2025. Samat said in a short video that the event would take a deep dive into the new features with the next version of Android. It will be live-streamed on the Android website and on YouTube, so everyone can join in.
The Android Show is not completely new; Google has been airing it for some time on YouTube. But it’s been mainly for developers. This year, though, Google is making an exception and opening up the event to a broader audience. The conference will occur one week before the full Google I/O 2025, which takes place on May 20-21, 2025, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. Even with the special Android event, that doesn’t mean Google won’t devote a separate Android session to the main Google I/O conference.
This next installment will be Android 16, and we will go into the all-new features of the new OS. There will also be several other sessions logically related to Android at I/O, on topics such as development tools, accessibility improvements, and Play. Those sessions will presumably be aimed at Android app developers, cutting them in on new tools and updates they can use to polish their apps. This shift in approach reflects Google’s growing focus on engaging with a wider audience, not just developers, for Android-related news and updates.
