There are actors who play a role — and then there are actors who *become* one. Tolkan spent 25 years in New York theater before transitioning to the big screen, making his mark in films including *Serpico* alongside Al Pacino in 1973, and *Prince of the City* in 1981. He also played Napoleon in Woody Allen’s *Love and Death* and the character Numbers in Warren Beatty’s *Dick Tracy*.

But it was his unforgettable turn as the perpetually unimpressed **Mr. Strickland** in [Back to the Future (1985)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_the_Future) that cemented his place in pop culture forever — a role he reprised across all three films in the beloved franchise. He also had a standout role as Commander Tom Jardian in Tom Cruise’s *Top Gun*, bringing the same no-nonsense authority that made him impossible to forget on screen.
