God of War Remasters Could Be Revealed on 20th Anniversary

In October 2024, rumors of a remaster of a possible God of War Greek saga started circulating and recollected a possible working relationship of Sony Santa Monica and Nixxes Software to remaster the original trilogy for the new generation.

Earlier speculation zoomed in on February’s State of Play announcement, which did not happen. Now, Grubb is hearing that the remaster could be shown off in time for the franchise’s 20th anniversary, which hits on March 22 — the same release date for the original God of War in North America. Back then, July 7 was the date European folk were asked to wait for before the arrival of the game.

Details are still light, but the remaster should feature significant graphic improvements from before. The first two games in the series were remastered for the PlayStation 3, and the third game was offered as an enhanced edition for the PlayStation 4. It may include some quality-of-life features, but a full remake is highly implausible as it would take significant time and dev resources.

It is curious that Sony seems eager to bring back the Greek saga once more. While these games provide key context for Kratos’ back story, the new Amazon Prime Video adaptation of the franchise will focus on the Norse mythology saga, instead of the Greek period.

The God of War live-action series was in development under Rafe Judkins before his exit from the project in late 2024. Since then, his role as showrunner has been assumed by the veteran Ronald D. Moore of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and For All Mankind. With speculation mounting, March 22 could bring exciting news for fans hoping to revisit Kratos’ original adventures in an enhanced format.
