Atlanta United have hijacked Urawa Red Diamonds’ attempt to sign Giōrgos Giakoumakīs from Scottish side Celtic. The transfer has been given the green light by renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, and he will be completing the switch very soon.
Celtic have accepted a bid worth $4.7 million and personal terms are set to be agreed soon as well. He will become a designated player for the MLS club, since they have a spot open ahead of the new season.
Giōrgos Giakoumakīs to sign for Atlanta United
The striker is expected to get a work permit which will allow him to feature for the club in time for the season opener. As of now, Giakoumakīs is travelling to Mexico where the preseason camp is taking place.
He will sign a three-year deal with the club, and it will include the option to extend for a further season.
In 28 appearances across all competitions for Celtic, the Greek forward has scored 9 goals and provided one assist. He has also earned 11 caps for the national team, scoring two goals since making his debut in November 2020.
Giōrgos Giakoumakīs had a contract with Celtic until 2026, having joined them in 2021. And only 1.5 years later, he is on the move to a new challenge away from Europe.
