Liverpool’s Gini Wijnaldum is in talks with Barcelona regarding a potential free transfer at the end of the season when his contract with the Merseyside club expires. These rumours have been circulating since the summer of 2020 when Ronald Koeman took charge of the club and Wijnaldum had a year left on his contract.
The Dutch international was approached multiple times for an extension by Liverpool but to no avail. And as things stand right now, he could well be on his way out of the club. There was also speculation that Barcelona were thinking against pursuing the player due to the rise of academy product Ilaix Moriba.
However, a meeting between the officials at Barcelona and Koeman has made sure that their interest in the player continues. As per a recent report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Wijnaldum has asked for a salary worth €8 million to play for Barcelona starting next season.
Barcelona are not in a very sustainable financial situation right now and will be hoping to make the most of the availability of a player of Wijnaldum’s stature on a free transfer.
There are talks that Memphis Depay could also join the club this season, after almost saying his goodbyes in the summer transfer window of 2020 only for Barcelona to be unable to present the funds needed to sign the player from Lyon. The Lyon captain too will be available for free at the end of the season and Barcelona could certainly be the destination for him this summer after missing out on the last one.
