Old Trafford bore witness to an epic rearguard action as India, staring down the barrel at 1 for 2 on Day 4, emerged unbowed by the end of the fifth day, courtesy of steely hundreds from Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. The resolute trio nullified England’s hopes of sealing the series with a match to spare, grinding out a memorable draw after five absorbing days.

Early Pressure, Later Defiance

When India resumed their second innings on Day 5 at Old Trafford, they had already clawed their way back from a precarious position. Shubman Gill and KL Rahul’s 188-run partnership had steadied the ship on Day 4. However, with the pitch still offering bounce and variable movement, England harboured hopes of an early breakthrough to tip the game back in their favour.

Those hopes briefly flared when Ben Stokes, pushing through pain and restricted by a shoulder niggle, produced a hostile spell early in the morning session. Bowling alongside Liam Dawson with the old ball, Stokes showed exceptional grit, bending his body through visible discomfort. He nearly shifted momentum when Ollie Pope dropped a sharp chance from Gill at short cover and later dismissed Rahul for 90, pinning him on the pads.

Gill’s Golden Series Continues

Facing a hat-trick ball on the fourth day, Gill could’ve easily succumbed to the pressure. Instead, he transformed that adversity into another magnificent innings, scoring his fourth hundred of the series. With his knock, he crossed the 700-run mark for the tour and entered elite territory—becoming only the third captain to notch four centuries in a single Test series.

Gill’s innings was built on technique and temperament. He handled short-pitched bowling, sharp turn, and tight lines with assurance. Even after taking a painful blow from a rising delivery by Stokes, Gill maintained composure, steering Chris Woakes through the off side to reach his milestone with a punch of joy.

Stokes: Leader in Pain, Fighter to the End

Having already delivered a five-wicket haul and a century earlier in the match, Stokes was visibly limited by injury. Yet, he still summoned the will to bowl eight overs in the morning, trying to trigger a collapse. Every delivery came with a grimace, his right shoulder frequently stretched between overs. But the England captain soldiered on, extracting bounce and creating chances.

That intensity couldn’t be sustained, though. After lunch, Stokes bowled just three more overs, and England’s attack began to look tired and blunt. Jofra Archer’s frustrations grew, culminating in a visible disagreement with his skipper over field placements. Woakes tried slower balls into the rough, Brydon Carse remained underused, and Dawson, while economical in his 47-over effort, lacked cutting edge.

Jadeja and Sundar Dig In, Refuse to Budge

India’s middle-order resolve was embodied by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. Promoted up the order in the second innings after Rishabh Pant’s injury, Sundar grabbed his opportunity with both hands, displaying composure and crisp strokeplay en route to his maiden Test century.

Jadeja, on the other hand, continued his stellar run with the bat this series, blunting England’s attack with patience and precision. The duo added an unbeaten 203-run stand, leaving England visibly exasperated.

Despite Stokes offering a draw at the beginning of the final hour, India chose not to accept. Gill remained seated at the balcony window, watching as his allrounders capitalized on England’s fatigue and lapses in discipline. England, incensed by India’s delay in accepting the inevitable, responded with exaggeratedly slow deliveries, but it mattered little.

Centuries Sealed Amid Tension

As tempers frayed, the moment of personal triumph arrived for the Indian pair. Jadeja raised his arms and let out a roar after dispatching a six straight down the ground to bring up his hundred. Sundar, on the other end, calmly jogged back for a second run before lifting his bat with quiet pride.

Ben Duckett’s early assertion—“It’s going to happen in a flurry, lads”—was rendered ironic by the unyielding grit India displayed. The contest’s final moments were anti-climactic in a way, but they summed up the story: India, despite being worn out from 150+ overs in the field, found inner steel and character when it mattered most.

Brief Scores

India 358 (Sai Sudharsan 61, Jaiswal 58, Pant 54, Stokes 5-72) and 425 for 4 (Jadeja 107*, Gill 103, Washington 101*, Rahul 90) drew with England 669 (Root 150, Stokes 141, Duckett 94, Crawley 84, Jadeja 4-143)

Looking Ahead to The Oval Showdown

With the match ending in only the second draw under Stokes’ captaincy, England were left rueing missed chances and physical tolls. The hosts have spent over 250 overs in the field during this Test, with their bowlers now facing a tight three-day turnaround before the fifth and final Test.

England vs india preview

India, meanwhile, travel to London battered but buoyed. They cannot win the series but can level it, and after a match-saving act that few predicted on Saturday afternoon, belief surges within the camp.

This was more than a stalemate—it was a statement. India’s batters stood tall, their resistance frustrating England’s hopes while keeping the series alive. For fans, it promises a gripping conclusion to what has already been an unforgettable contest between two spirited cricketing nations.
