Manchester United have opened talks with Barcelona for the signing of Frenkie De Jong this summer. The opening bid is yet to be made for the player, and the price tag for him is set at €85 million.
De Jong is not very ambitious about joining the club this summer, mainly since they don’t have a Champions League spot next season. Competing in the top flight of European football is a priority for the player, and as a result, he is not eyeing up an exit from Barcelona.
Frenkie De Jong a realistic target for Manchester United this summer
The Netherlands international spent two years playing under new Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag at Ajax. During that time, he starred in their 2018/19 Champions League semi-final run. The following summer, he made his move to Barcelona where he hasn’t quite been as red-hot as he was expected to be.
With Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic both leaving United, replacements are needed at Old Trafford. And with Erik Ten Hag set to revamp the squad, Frenkie De Jong is one of the prime targets for the new squad that is in the works.
However, the player has acknowledged that he has no plans of moving from Barcelona. And as a result, it will be difficult for Manchester United to convince him to join the club. But at the request of Erik Ten Hag, they are not quite giving up their pursuit of the midfielder just yet.
