Chelsea are close to appointing Frank Lampard as their caretaker manager until the end of the season. They sacked Graham Potter following their 2-0 loss against Aston Villa, and currently have Bruno Saltor overseeing the first team.

Negotiations between Chelsea and Lampard’s representatives are in advanced stages for a short-term role until June. The board is currently interviewing Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann, and want to take their time before appointing a long-term manager.

Lampard most recently managed Everton before being replaced by Sean Dyche. He was in charge of Chelsea between 2019 and 2021, and guided them through their transfer ban. Several academy talents came to the forefront under him, such as Mason Mount, Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori.

And with ample Premier League experience under his belt, Frank Lampard could be a decent appointment for the club for the short term. However, he hasn’t proven himself to be an option for the top level just yet. So, it is doubtful that he could help improve results in the short term.

Graham Potter was signed on a five-year contract, but was sacked only seven months in. And following their ravish spending on signings, it is essential that the board makes the right appointment this time around. As a result, they are interviewing candidates thoroughly before committing.

And the coming of the new head coach could be as late as June, right before the pre-season.
