Italian club Chievo Verona will no longer exist starting from the current season. The reason behind this is the financial irregularities found within the club’s records.
The Italian board punished them by pushing them down to Serie D to fight their way back up, but have failed to attract any new buyers. The deadline for new buyers to come forth was yesterday, and given that nobody has decided to invest, the club cannot exist anymore.
Club legend, former captain and potential investor Sergio Pellissier posted a message to announce that the club will fold and he conveyed his feelings towards the club as well.
“Unfortunately, today the story of this club that gave me so much has come to a close,” Pellissier wrote on Instagram. “It’s one of the saddest days of my life. I tried with all my strength, and I really hoped to start again with a new club and continue this fantastic story, it would’ve been marvellous. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get it done.
“I thought there were more people ready to step up and safeguard football in this city and this region, but that was not the case.
“We tried. I am just sad that we had so little time during a complicated period to find sponsors. So, goodbye my beloved Chievo, you will always be the most important club in my life.”
The Flying Donkeys were in the top flight as recently as 2019, and have a record of finishing as high as fifth. They were relegated in 2019 and have struggled to cope with the financial difficulties ever since.
