Vincent Kompany was one of the best defenders during his time in the Premier League. He won four Premier League titles with Manchester City before leaving the club in May 2019.

He joined Belgian club Anderlecht in a player-manager role. On Monday, Kompany has announced his retirement from football as a player. He will now fully focus on being a manager. He has signed a four-year deal with Anderlecht.

Vincent Kompany joined Manchester City from Hamburg in 2008 for a reported fee of around £6m. He made 360 appearances for the Premier League side winning 4 Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups, 4 League Cups and 2 Community Shields. After a hugely successful 11 years at The Etihad Stadium, he left in 2019 as a City legend. He returned to his boyhood club Anderlecht as a player-manager.

Kompany will now begin his coaching career in full fledge with Anderlecht. He told the club website: “I want to fully commit to my role as a coach and need 100 per cent of my time and focus for it. That’s why I’m quitting as a football player. Our ambition and hunger remain the same.”

“I want to stay with the club for at least four seasons and prove that Anderlecht can play a modern style of football, with results. I want to thank Franky (co-manager Frank Vercauteren) for all his help.”

The 34-year-old will now start a new phase in his highly decorated career.
