The Apple Touch Bar, despite its potential, was met with largely negative feedback due to poor execution. The Flexbar is a customizable and adaptable shortcut bar independent of the keyboard, and while other manufacturers have explored customizing one, ENIAC has reimagined the concept.
This almost 10-inch aluminum bar has a 2K AMOLED panel and connects to computers, tablets, or phones via USB-C. The Flexbar is competitive with more flexibility and functionality versus the Touch Bar. ENIAC co-founder Ray Wenting demonstrated how it could be used as a media controller and visualizer, but ENIAC is capable of so much more.
Apple Touch Bar Reimagined as $119 Flexbar with 10-inch 2K AMOLED Display and USB-C Connectivity
The Flexbar is like an Elgato Stream Deck, except instead of having a bunch of fixed keys, it has a fully customizable touchscreen that takes up the entire front of the device. You can put any shortcuts, tools, or keys on it, which automatically switch depending on the app currently in use. When editing a video the controls will change accordingly, and when you boot up a game they will shift again.
With program-specific shortcuts already loaded onto the Flexbar, it becomes a plug-and-play device and there are many other customization options. It also dives into third-party APIs and becomes compatible with many applications.
If you want to be a little more personal about it, the FlexbarDesigner app enables you to create it fully and share your layout with the community. In terms of build quality, ENIAK features premium materials such as an aluminum alloy 2K OLED screen and a linear motor for the haptic feedback features. It features an aluminum magnetic stand along with non-slip silicone pads for improved usability and stability.
Almost all of the Touch Bar’s problems are solved with this device, which in fact is a portable size, a customizable piece of equipment you can use with almost any system (Windows, Android, etc). The only drawback is the absence of wireless connectivity, which could be fixed with future iterations. At the moment, it can be pre-ordered on Kickstarter for $119, versus a regular price of $179.99, to ship in February 2025.
