Flamengo have won the 2022 Copa Libertadores, defeating 10-man Athletico Paranaense 1-0 in the finals. The winning goal came from Gabriel Barbosa, in the first half injury time.
Pedro Henrique was sent off for a second yellow card in the 43rd minute, and Paranaense conceded right after the incident. They managed to not concede any more in the second half but were unable to equalise with 45 minutes available.
Flamengo win the 2022 Copa Libertadores
This is the third Copa Libertadores title for Flamengo, who lifted the trophy in 2019 and 1981 prior to that.
Paranaense, on the other hand, featuring former Manchester City captain Fernandinho, have lost their first final since 2005 when they lost to Sao Paulo.
The winners enjoyed the majority of the ball, ending the game with 73% of possession and managing 15 shots during the 90 minutes. There were several opportunities for them to add a second, including one for Gabigol. However, his attempt was saved and he couldn’t add to his six-goal tally for the season.
And with their victory, Flamengo have become the first team in the history of the Copa Libertadores to win every knockout game from the Round of 16 to the final.
