First DDR5 modules in production picture rollout

In recent times the demand for high-performing technology has increased, and as such many tech giants are dipping their hands with the future tech. As such, the latest DDR5 technology will soon become mainstream in the market, as the manufacturers have slowly started picking up their memory production and finalizing their design for the new next-generation standard.

Intel will be utilizing this new tech in its upcoming Intel (Alder Lake) & AMD (Raphael) platforms which are expected to launch later this year. The memory manufacturer, Jiahe Jinwei, has announced that it has received the first batch of DDR5 memory modules from its assembly line based in the Shenzhen Pingshan factory.

It stated that the DDR5 tech has already entered into the mass production phase and is expected to launch later this year with the next-generation platforms from Intel and AMD. However, Intel will first offer the next-gen memory support on its next-gen Alder Lake platform comprising of the Z690 chipset-based motherboards, as reported here.

Currently, we know that the DDR5 memory modules have two distinct designs, one with a green-coloured PCB that comes straight from the Chinese manufacturer while the others have been pictured by Uniko’s hardware & feature a black PCB colour. The most prominent feature of both modules is that they feature an onboard PMIC (Power Management IC). This IC will take DC (5V) power directly from the motherboard & deliver it to the DRAM more efficiently than DDR4 modules.

The manufacturer stated that the current batch of DDR5 memory modules features frequencies of 4800 MHz with a voltage of 1.1V. The timings are set at CL40-40-40, and each DIMM holds a capacity of 16 GB, although dual-sided 32 GB modules are also in the works.

The DDR5 technology will be extremely high in performance and is expected to deliver over twice the performance increase over DDR4. DDR4 can easily hit speeds of over 7 GHz with OC, so 10 GHz doesn’t sound like a big deal for the next-gen memory as SK Hynix, and Micron delivers faster DRAM chips to vendors. However, the production and development of the DDR5 have just begun, and the technology will have more to offer than its predecessor.
