The majority of football’s international leaders, according to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, are in favor of switching to a biannual World Cup. The concept of staging a World Cup event every two years has sparked debate, with some suggesting that it will increase enthusiasm while others believe it will be overkill and detrimental to the players’ health.
About the Summit
Infantino presented his case to the presidents of football federations from across the world at a conference recently, and according to ESPN, one of his main points was the extra $4.4 billion in money that more tournaments would provide.
That statistic appears in a 700-page feasibility analysis conducted by FIFA to see if more World Cups would be successful, with the complete findings due to be released at a later date.
What does Infantino have to say?
Infantino confessed: “If I was going to a vote tomorrow, probably the majority would vote in favor of a World Cup every two years,”
“But it is not the topic, we are looking at the entire calendar and how we can make football better and how many we can bring on board with a new way of organizing the future in football.”
Infantino then declined to say whether a formal vote or discussion will take place at the FIFA congress in Doha on March 31, 2022.
He said: “It is about getting the right decisions for football at the end of the day and we will take the time that it takes, to come to this decision. I will not commit to anything at the congress. Everything is open and flexible.”
“We continue the dialogue, the analysis, we hope we can make progress, one way or the other, or some middle way, we will see.”
