Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro has been named the new sporting director of Mexican side Chivas. The announcement comes shortly after previous sporting director Ricardo Pelaez was sacked and a day after the dismissal of manager Ricardo Cadena.

With the appointment, the team will have a few months to prepare for the upcoming season. And they will also have ample time to find a new manager who can lead them into a new chapter.

“It’s a fantastic challenge,” Fernando Hierro said. “It’s a different project, a project that carries many millions of Mexicans in its soul.”

“We’re looking for a coach that knows how to work with young people, who knows the league or who has been working closely with the league, also, who has trained in the big leagues in Europe,” Hierro said about the managerial search. “Those are the characteristics we have in mind that the person must have.”

Chivas have a large fan following in Liga MX, and also have the most championships with 12. However, they have been unable to reach the finals since 2018. Hierro will be looking to end the four-year streak by appointing a new manager and setting up a project to make the club win silverware once again.

The veteran has been the manager of the Spanish national team, and has also worked as their sporting director, and won 89 caps for Spain while making 601 appearances for Real Madrid.
