Can FC Barcelona Rebuild Under Koeman?

Barcelona have recently been under tremendous financial pressure, with club vice-president Carlos Tusquets publicly acknowledging that the club will not be able to pay the players their salaries for January.

A recent discovery, first reported by Marca, reports that Barcelona owe 19 other clubs as much as €126 million in the short term for player signings. The same document reveals that the club will have to pay out €196 million in the long run. The club still owes money for players that are no longer at the club like Arthur Melo, Malcolm and Jose Arnaiz.

There was speculation in the past regarding Barcelona paying Atletico Madrid a sum worth €15 million for silence over the documents regarding the signing of Antoine Griezmann, and preference in future signings of players from the club. The document now reveals that Barcelona owe Atletico €5 million for ‘preferential rights’.

Moreover, Barcelona still owe Liverpool €29 million this financial year for Phillipe Coutinho, who is currently out injured for a few months and has made 14 appearances for the team this season. The total sum owed for the deal is worth €40 million, which might be cleared off in the next financial year.

Antoine Griezmann happy to be Barcelona’s new No. 9

With Barcelona’s presidential elections being pushed back to March, things don’t look very secure for the club in the short term. They have invited foreign investors to help them out with their financial problems, but no specific solution has been arrived at yet.
