FC Barcelona transfer news: Free agent signings are likely the way to go for Barcelona this summer owing to their financial restrictions. The club will have to cut down on their expenses while bolstering the squad, leaving free transfers as the only option. 

Here are five players that Xavi Hernandez could be given to boost the squad’s performances next season.

5. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The striker has practically been frozen out of the first team this season, and is expected to leave in the summer. A return to Barcelona could be on the cards since he still maintains a great relationship with the board and the rest of the players. 

4. Ilkay Gundogan 

Manchester City are still waiting for Ilkay Gundogan to decide his future — taking time as new contract would probably mean to complete his career there. 🔵 #MCFC

The Manchester City midfielder has a decision to make ahead of June. He has been given the option to renew by City, but Barcelona have also approached him. It now remains to be seen whether the Germany international will make the move to Camp Nou this summer.

3. Marcus Thuram 

The young forward is expected to leave Borussia Monchengladbach on a free transfer in June. He has shown immense quality in front of goal, with pace and power. And naturally, Barcelona have emerged as one of the candidates to sign him on a free once he leaves. 

2. Inigo Martinez

A left-footed centre-back is high on the priority list for Xavi, and Inigo Martinez has practically agreed to join Barcelona on a free transfer this summer. But, the move remains subject to financial fair play rules which need to be abided by in order for him to be registered. 

1. Lionel Messi 

Barcelona have revealed that they have made contact with Messi’s camp over a return. But, the player has not fully agreed to returning to Camp Nou just yet. He has an offer to renew from PSG, but would like to further understand the project and his position in it before committing.
