His running club and charitable organization, Sikhs in the City, confirmed the news, stating that all upcoming events will now serve as tributes to Singh’s extraordinary legacy.

His long-time coach and confidant, Harmander Singh, shared the sorrowful news on Facebook: “It is with great sadness that we confirm our icon of humanity and powerhouse of positivity Fauja Singh has passed away in India. Aged 114 years old. He succumbed to injuries caused by a vehicle accident close to his home.“

The Rise of an Unlikely Running Legend

What makes Fauja Singh’s journey remarkable is that he didn’t lace up his running shoes until he was 89 years old. While most people his age were embracing retirement, Singh was preparing for his first marathon, which he completed in London in an astonishing 6 hours and 54 minutes—setting a new benchmark in the 90+ age category, improving the previous record by a staggering 58 minutes.

Born on April 1, 1911, during the British Raj, Singh was the youngest of four siblings in a humble Punjabi farming family. He later migrated to the United Kingdom, settling in London with his son after the death of his wife, Gian Kaur. But instead of settling into a quiet life, he embraced running, using it not only as a form of physical exercise but also as a way to cope with personal grief.

A Global Inspiration

Fauja Singh’s most celebrated moment came in 2011, when at the age of 100, he became the first centenarian in recorded history to complete a marathon—the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. His personal best was clocked in the same event in 2003, when he finished in 5 hours and 40 minutes.

His athletic achievements include numerous marathon completions and accolades, but Singh’s real impact extended far beyond the finish line. With his trademark turban, flowing white beard, and unshakable optimism, he symbolized perseverance, simplicity, and the idea that age is merely a number.

He was not only a sports icon but also a cultural ambassador, often advocating for healthy living, intergenerational inspiration, and Sikh identity on the global stage.

Condolences Pour In From Across the Globe

Tributes have flooded social media and political platforms since news of Singh’s death broke. UK MP Preet Kaur Gill shared: “Saddened to hear about the passing of Fauja Singh. His discipline, simple living, and deep humility left a lasting mark on me. A reminder that age is just a number, but attitude is everything. Rest in power, legend.”

Another heartfelt message came from MP Jas Athwal, who represents Ilford South: “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji. He was a global Sikh icon who inspired millions across the world. His spirit and legacy of resilience will run on forever.”

Legacy Beyond the Track

Even after retiring from competitive races at age 101, Singh remained active in community work, regularly participating in charity runs and spreading awareness about mental health, fitness, and age positivity. His life inspired documentaries, books, and even advertising campaigns celebrating resilience and diversity.

A Life Cut Short by India’s Road Menace

That Fauja Singh, a man who defied time and human limitation, met his end not from age or illness but from a road accident, is a bitter pill to swallow. It highlights a sobering reality: India’s roads remain perilous, even for its most celebrated sons.

Despite his global fame and age-defying athleticism, Singh could not escape the danger posed by careless driving and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure in his homeland. Roads that should connect lives often become sites of tragedy due to reckless riders, unregulated traffic, and poor civic planning.

His death is not just a personal loss but a national shame—one that reflects the urgent need for accountability, road safety reforms, and public awareness. That a centenarian marathon legend, respected across continents, could be struck down so thoughtlessly while simply crossing a road in broad daylight, serves as a damning indictment of the very system that failed to protect him.

Let Fauja Singh’s legacy be more than just medals and marathons—let it be a wake-up call for a country that owes its heroes far better.
