Fallout New Vegas remains the fan-favorite installment of the Fallout franchise, largely due to its compelling storytelling by Obsidian Entertainment. Although it’s widely seen as a buggy mess, many role-playing game fans consider it to be the studio’s best work. Rumors of a follow-up have escalated over the years, particularly in light of Obsidian joining the Xbox family following the acquisition of Bethesda and the success of the Fallout TV series on Amazon Prime.

Fallout New Vegas Writer Returns to Obsidian, But Not for FNV 2 Project
Obsidian’s CEO Feargus Urquhart has been open about his love for the series, even saying in October 2022 that if the chance to make another Fallout game came up, the studio would “absolutely” take it. He added that the game would have to align with what Bethesda is doing with the franchise, but personally, he hoped to make another Fallout before retiring.
The hype readied to get to a rolling boil when John Gonzalez, a well-known game author who had helped produce prominent titles including Tom Clancy’s EndWar, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Horizon Forbidden West, announced that he had actually returned to Itch. Fans quickly hoped this meant a Fallout New Vegas sequel was in the works too, given Gonzalez’s previous role as Lead Creative Designer and Lead Writer on Fallout New Vegas.
But when Gonzalez confirmed that his new gig at Obsidian has nothing to do with Fallout New Vegas 2, he just smashed that guessing game. In fact, his retraction was to reveal that his return to the studio was for a project unrelated to the Fallout franchise. There has yet to be any confirmation regarding a sequel however, with Obsidian more focused on upcoming titles such as Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, which should both be out in the near future. Fans may have to be content waiting on a return to Fallout, but Obsidian’s current work suggests exciting adventures coming in the near future.
