Facebook has been silent about the progress that it has made in its development of augmented reality hardware products. One of the much-awaited hardware devices is the Smart Glasses, which Facebook is reportedly developing with Ray-Ban. Recent reports suggest that it is ready to be unveiled, as Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO hinted this during an earnings call he made this week.

There has been a lot of speculation revolving around the projected 2021 unveiling of the device, the original release date may have been affected due to the pandemic but it appears as the overall outlook and expectations remain optimistic towards an early 2022 launch.

Post the hint of Mark Zuckerberg, we should not be surprised in the event of the Smart Glasses releasing at the end of 2021 as well. Facebook is developing the Ray-Ban smart glasses in partnership with Lens pioneer EssilorLuxottica. According to Facebook, the device has a decent form factor which enables the user to do his/her tasks with ease. These glasses are a precursor of truly augmented reality (AR) glasses.

They are not technically classified as AR devices, these smart glasses do not need an integrated display so they can be controlled via a paired device such as a smartphone or a tablet.

There is still much unknown about the Smart Glasses, especially when it comes to their functionality and features.

Facebook does appear to be making steady progress in its pursuit of developing devices that support Augmented Reality. The Ray-Ban smart glasses are a strong step in this direction, the goal of the social media icon is to have fully AR functional glasses in the foreseeable future. Earlier we had seen Google also attempting to create their own Smart Glasses, we will have to wait and see as to which of their devices performs better.
