The sequel to the remake trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, was formally unveiled at the Final Fantasy 7 25th anniversary celebration in 2022. Rebirth finds us leaving the corrupted metropolis in pursuit of greener pastures—and Sephiroth—while Final Fantasy 7 Remake took us on a fresh trip through the well-known slums of Midgar.
There are many things about Rebirth that we don’t yet know, such as the events it will cover, how true it will be to the first game, how the open world will appear, and just how attractive Vincent Valentine will be. Here is a summary of everything we currently know about the upcoming game, including trailers and purchase information, while we wait for answers to these questions.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Release date
Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth’s release date is still unknown, however, Square Enix did give us a window of time: winter 2023. For those keeping score at home, the first installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy was launched almost three and a half years ago. The third and final installment’s release date hasn’t been announced, which may indicate that we’ll have to wait a while to find out how this reinterpretation turns out.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Platforms
Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth appears to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive as of right now. Fans who played the first game in the Remake trilogy on PlayStation 4 may find this disappointing, even though the current-gen console will have been available for just over three years by the time of release.
Likely, the game will also be released on PC after its temporary exclusivity period expires. We wouldn’t anticipate seeing Rebirth arrive on Xbox, though, given that the first game in the series is still not accessible there.

The next stop for our party, let us assume the game does follow the original’s plot, is Kalm, a sleepy town northeast of Midgar. Since Remake only covered the first seven or so hours of the original game, leaving the final two entries with a lot of ground to cover, we can also assume that Rebirth will be much more densely packed than Remake.
Rebirth is likely to wrap up right after the City of the Ancients, giving us a chance to see the upgraded versions of Rocket Town, Nibelheim, Cosmo Canyon, Junon, and Mt. Corel in addition to a potentially disastrous moment. Additionally, we’ll probably get the ability to complete the original Final Fantasy 7 team by including Yuffie, Vincent, and Cid in our group.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Trailers
So far, there is only one trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Revealed during 2022’s Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary Celebration, this trailer briefly follows Cloud and Sephiroth as they embark on their final mission together as SOLDIERS. It then poses the question, “What is fact and what is fiction?” before jumping to a new scene: Zack carrying an incapacitated Cloud towards Midgar.
Based on this trailer, it seems like Rebirth will follow the events of Final Fantasy 7 very closely, as it alludes to some pretty big reveals and iconic moments. It’s also worth noting this trailer shows off a noticeable improvement in graphics, proving Square Enix is making good use of the PlayStation 5’s upgraded hardware.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Development
Producer Yoshinori Kitase declared the remake series will be a trilogy not long after the debut of the first trailer. On Twitter, Kitase revealed this information and how it affected Rebirth, writing:
“Making the middle part of a trilogy has its own challenges, but there are plenty of classic second installments in the world of film that are defined by stunning story twists and deeper explorations of their characters. Often these second installments become a favorite amongst the fans. In the same vein, we are aiming to make Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth an even more gripping and memorable experience than Final Fantasy 7 Remake.”
Director Naoki Hamaguchi announced Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is in full production on June 16, 2022, so let’s hope the business can stick to the original release window of winter 2023.
