Everton have put an end to Arsenal’s impressive run by defeating them 1-0 at Goodison Park. Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of the Toffees saw them overcome the Premier League leaders and blow the title race wide open.
Mikel Arteta has become the first Arsenal manager to lose three of his first away games at Everton. And their run of 14 unbeaten games has finally come to an end against a resolute performance from the Merseyside club.
Everton hand Arsenal shocking loss to blow title race wide open
James Tarkowski scored the only goal of the game, combining with his former Burnley teammate Dwight McNeil to help Dyche pick up a huge win.
The game was a very tight affair with few opportunities, and Arsenal struggled to come up with their free flowing best. They were unable to take the opportunities that were presented to them, and it ended up costing them dearly.
Amadou Onana, in particular, was the driving force behind Everton’s win. He was tireless in midfield and didn’t allow the opposition a moment’s rest on the ball.
Everton have had a very poor season so far, and they were running the risk of being sent down to the Championship for the first time since 1954. But with the arrival of Sean Dyche, the fans have something to be hopeful for as they might just escape by the skin of their teeth again.
For Arsenal, the title race is back on. If Manchester City can win against Tottenham, the points gap between them will be reduced to two. And this could ramp up the stakes even higher when the two teams meet on February 16.
