Euro 2020: England cruise past Ukraine to make it to the semi-final

The final Euro 2020 quarter final clash more of a one-sided affair, when compared to the other fixtures of the same round. Spain game against Switzerland went to penalties, while the Italians got through on a slender lead; the same goes for Denmark, who won 2-1 against Czech Republic. However, England fans didn’t have to dwell on the edge of their seats, as their side were clear with a 4-0 victory.

Ukraine started in a 3-5-2 formation, with key players in Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko and Former Borussia Dortmund winger Andriy Yarmolenko leading the side. They were to be definitively in much of a defensive approach with England pulling all the strings. However, after conceding the early goal, Shevchenko’s side were noticeably in a motivated state when they controlled most of the possession and kept a large share of the offensive action in their account.

This went on for a while, before England got back on track to score another two before the break. Gareth Southgate started his side in a 4-2-3-1 again, as they were expected to be on the offensive side this time around. With the likes of Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho starting, it was visible that they were looking for an offensive approach. Among other things, there were talks around Sancho; the fact that he got his first start at the competition after his talks being finalized with Manchester United hasn’t escaped conversation.

As expected, England dictated most of the statistics, except for the possession percentage, which was quite balanced. However, it did not bother them, as they had the most important one on their side. With goals from Harry Kane and Harry Maguire in the first half making it 3-0, Southgate looked a satisfied coach on the night. The English joy only increased as Jordan Henderson came on to register himself on the score sheet.

England now face Denmark in the semi-final, with Italy going up against Spain.
