Éric Abidal’s contract has been terminated by the Barcelona board

After sacking Quique Setién officially, we thought as if Éric Abidal would be safe from the “severe restructure” at the club having lost to Bayern Munich by 8-2 recently. But however, with the club’s official statement today, the ex-French Barça player has been sacked as well because he was too part of the club’s bad fate since he took over as the sporting director of Barcelona. Here’s the club’s statement:

FC Barcelona and Éric Abidal have reached an agreement for the ending of the contract that united the two parties.

The Club would publicly like to thank Éric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication, and the close and positive nature of his relationship with all aspects of the Blaugrana family.”

One of Abdial’s final acts at the club was to inform Setien about the club’s decision of sacking the coach and they met together, little did Abidal knew he would be terminated from his contract as well. Even though Abidal, a former Barcelona defender was a two-times Champions League winner during his stay at the club, he was practically successful enough in the role for over two years.

He was responsible for the heavyweight signings such as Griezmann or Coutinho, without even a proper plan of implementing the player’s role in the team. Obviously, a lot of radical changes and decisions has led to the downfall at the club which indeed has made Lionel Messi furious at the club and according to rumours, he could ask to the leave the club.

Although Barcelona has won the La Liga back-to-back, except this season, its Champion’s league dream is still missing and we know how Messi really wants to end his career with a ‘winning project’. This is just the start of the much proposed “changes” that are supposed to be taking place in the days to come and we could see a lot of players sold for budgets as well.

Also, the club will be appointing Ronald Koeman as the next coach of Barcelona. The Dutchman is currently over negotiations with the club and will soon take over the charge at the club. Bartomeu is doing as much possible to make his image clear at the club and has been forced to prepone the presidential elections as well, so a lot of things are going in Barcelona, we will keep you posted regarding all updates.
