The mark of a champion is being able to deal with pressure at any point and still come out on top. England Women achieved that with their Finalissima win over Brazil, taking one step closer to being the most dominant team in women’s football right now.
The Three Lionesses were leading the game for the most part, courtesy of Ella Toone. She was a supersub during their victorious Euro campaign, and has now emerged as a starting option in the national team. Toone maintained her goalscoring form, and helped England stay on the front foot for the rest of the game.
England Women poised for World Cup win after Finalissima?
In spite of conceding the equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time, England women were able to hold on. They took the game to penalties after either side was unable to get an extra goal in the thirty minutes of added time.
And amidst all the pressure, Sarina Weigman’s side was able to come out on top with a 4-2 win in the Finalissima. This has taken their unbeaten run to 30 games, as they won a penalty shootout in front of 83,000 fans in London to lift another piece of silverware.
Given the resilience, and the winning mentality that they are showing, England are no doubt the favourites to win the Women’s World Cup when they go to Australia and New Zealand later this year. If they do win the trophy, they will have held every available trophy at the same time – similar to the Argentina men’s national team in 2022.
