England’s Managerial Hunt: Ancelotti and Guardiola Approached Before FA Settled on Thomas Tuchel

The Football Association’s (FA) search for a new England manager took several surprising turns before landing on German tactician Thomas Tuchel. While the FA explored multiple high-profile options, including Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola, one major English candidate, Eddie Howe, was notably overlooked.

This article delves into the series of events, the surprise snubs, and the rationale behind the FA’s decision to appoint Tuchel over other rumored names.

Ancelotti and Guardiola on England’s Radar

Football icons Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola were both approached by the FA during their search for a new manager for the England national team. According to reliable sources, the FA had discussions with both managers in the summer of 2023, seeking to bring in an experienced, high-profile coach. Ancelotti, a five-time Champions League winner with experience in the Premier League, La Liga, and other top European leagues, was viewed as a leading contender given his illustrious track record.

Guardiola, considered one of the finest managers in football, was also a key target. His transformation of Manchester City into a dominant force in English and European football made him an appealing option for the FA, who were keen on bringing in the best tactical mind to guide the Three Lions. However, despite initial discussions, neither manager took the helm of the England team.

Eddie Howe Overlooked

Amid the FA’s high-profile approaches, there was one name that was surprisingly absent from their shortlist: Eddie Howe. According to Alan Shearer, speaking on his podcast The Rest is Football, the Newcastle United boss was not considered for the role. “I am told they didn’t speak to Eddie Howe or sound him out at all,” Shearer revealed, expressing his surprise given Howe’s reputation as the top English manager in the Premier League.

The omission of Howe, who had revitalized Newcastle United and guided them to European contention, raised eyebrows. Many believed he would be the leading English candidate to take over the national team. As Gary Lineker noted on the same podcast episode, “It’s a big surprise for me, considering he would be the outstanding English candidate.” The decision not to even consider Howe has reignited debates about whether the national team should be led by an Englishman.

The FA’s Stance on English Managers

The FA’s decision to pursue foreign managers like Tuchel, Guardiola, and Ancelotti over homegrown talent sparked significant discussion. Micah Richards, another pundit on the podcast, pointed out the ongoing debate surrounding the role of English coaches in the national setup. “The whole thing of St. George’s Park was to create not just players but also coaches,” Richards said, referencing the FA’s long-term vision for developing English talent.

Richards acknowledged, however, that the FA may have struggled to find an English candidate strong enough to take the job. Graham Potter, another English name in the mix, was also linked to the role, but it appears the FA felt more confident in securing a manager with a proven international pedigree.

Despite this, Richards agreed that “you don’t need an English manager, just the best person for the job.” For many, the ultimate goal is success, regardless of the manager’s nationality. And in Tuchel, a proven winner, the FA found someone they believed could deliver results.

Thomas Tuchel’s Appointment Amid Manchester United Rumors

Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as England manager came amid growing interest from Manchester United, who were reportedly considering him as a replacement for Erik ten Hag. Ten Hag had been struggling at Old Trafford, overseeing Manchester United’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season. With Tuchel tipped as the Red Devils’ top choice to replace the Dutchman, the FA moved quickly to secure his services.

As Lineker speculated on the podcast, “I wonder whether that had any influence on it… maybe the FA have gone, ‘Cikey, we don’t want to miss out to United,’ and it maybe pushed them because it does seem slightly odd with the timing.” The timing of the FA’s decision to lock down Tuchel coincided with Manchester United’s internal discussions about Ten Hag’s future, suggesting the FA acted to avoid losing their preferred candidate to club football.

Tuchel’s Winning Pedigree

In Tuchel, England now has a manager with a wealth of experience and a history of success. The German coach has previously won the Champions League with Chelsea and domestic titles in Germany and France. His reputation as a winner and his tactical expertise make him an intriguing appointment for the Three Lions, who have struggled to claim major international trophies since their World Cup victory in 1966.

Micah Richards summed up the sentiment well, stating, “We have to agree he is a winner, no matter where he comes from. He could be the difference between winning and losing.” The pressure will now be on Tuchel to deliver the kind of success the FA and England fans have long been craving.

A Bold Move by the FA

By choosing Thomas Tuchel over other high-profile names like Ancelotti and Guardiola, the FA has made a bold decision. While some may lament the lack of an English manager at the helm, the priority has always been finding the best person for the job. With Tuchel’s proven track record and tactical prowess, England’s future under his guidance promises to be an exciting journey. Only time will tell if this gamble will pay off and lead the Three Lions to the silverware they desperately seek.
