England 1-0 Spain: Young Lions win U-21 Euros after James Trafford heroics at death

England have won the U-21 Euros 2023, defeating Spain 1-0 in the final of the tournament. Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones scored the only goal of the match to put his side ahead. However, the real hero of the match was goalkeeper James Trafford.

The Manchester City goalkeeper denied Abel Ruiz from the penalty spot during stoppage time, and also blocked Aimar Oroz from scoring in the follow-up in a double save. His incredible composure at the death ensured that Lee Carsley’s side maintained their record of not conceding a single goal during the Euros, and lifted the trophy.

No other team has won the Euros without conceding a single goal during the entire tournament. And in hindsight, Chelsea defender Levi Colwill will be relieved knowing that his error leading to the penalty did not cost his country the title at the crucial stage of the game.

Newcastle United midfielder Anthony Gordon claimed the player of the tournament award, scoring two goals and providing one assist in six games. The former Everton player noted that any of his teammates could have had the award, on the back of their remarkable campaign.

Spain put up a strong fight especially during the end of the game, but they were unable to break through England’s impenetrable defence. And in spite of making it to the finals by defeating Ukraine 3-0, they were completely shut out by the young lions in the finals of the U-21 Euros as their campaign ended in heartbreak.
