RB Leipzig mainstay Emil Forsberg will be leaving the club during the January transfer window to move to the MLS. The Swedish midfielder will sign for New York Red Bulls, the MLS franchise owned by the Red Bull Group, during the 2024 season.
He will play the final two games ahead of the January window, and will then be moving on after spending eight years with the Bundesliga club. He joined them from Malmö in his native Sweden, when Leipzig were in the 2. Bundesliga, and helped them gain promotion to the first division that season.
Emil Forsberg to sign for New York Red Bulls in the January transfer window
The 32-year-old has a contract that runs until June 2025, but will be moving on early to take up a new challenge in the United States. His game time had been reduced after the massive arrival of attacking talent this past summer, and Leipzig will now undergo a change in guard.
Over eight years, he has made 323 appearances across all competitions, scoring 70 goals while providing 68 assists. He won the DFB Pokal with the Red Bull club for two seasons in a row between 2021 and 2023. Forsberg also lifted the 23/24 German Super Cup, which will now go down as his last trophy.
Leipzig will also be losing Fabio Carvalho alongside Emil Forsberg during the January transfer window. The Portuguese is set to return to Liverpool, who are unhappy with his lack of playing time and want a different solution for him to take to the field regularly.
