Emerson could be on his way back to Chelsea in January

Emerson Palmieri

Chelsea are still working to call back Emerson from his loan spell with French club Lyon. The Italian left-back is one of the options for Thomas Tuchel to replace Ben Chilwell. The England international is out injured for the remainder of the season, after he had to undergo surgery.

Marcos Alonso is the only natural left-back in the squad, which has left Chelsea short staffed. Saul Niguez has been one of the players who has had to play at left-back, and things haven’t been working out for him in that position.

Natural wingers like Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic have also had to put in the shifts out wide. But, with the fixtures coming in thick and fast, the Blues will be needing a more reliable option.

Following the arrival of Chilwell, Emerson was loaned out to Lyon since he wouldn’t have a lot of game time. But due to Chelsea’s injury crisis, things are looking much different.

They had been linked with Everton left-back Lucas Digne, who is on his way out of the club. But, Everton only want a permanent move for the Frenchman, while Chelsea would prefer a loan move. It looks very unlikely that he will be moving to Stamford Bridge now.

Even though Lyon rejected the Premier League club’s first approach, Chelsea are prepared to offer a compensation for their player to get him back for the remainder of the season.
