Elche head coach Eder Sarabia announced his departure from the club with immediate effect during a sudden press conference called on Wednesday, May 27. Elche have been rocked by the shock news that manager Eder Sarabia has resigned from his post. Los Franjiverdes survived on the final day of the season with a 1-1 draw away to Girona, maintaining their La Liga status, but Sarabia appears to be stepping away for personal reasons.

My goal with this press conference is that, although I understand that with this decision we can leave many people sad who have been excited, who will probably be a little disappointed because they wanted to continue together, but I want them to understand the reasons.” 

He confirmed in the press conference that he will take a period of rest away from coaching. He indicated that he made the decision last Sunday “with calm and clarity.” “At this vital moment, there are other things that are fundamental in my life that need attention,” he explained, adding that he will probably continue living in Elche but has set no date for a return to coaching.

After achieving promotion to La Liga in his first year in charge, the 45-year-old followed up by guiding Elche to a 15th-placed finish. The final months of the term proved hugely stressful, as the Franjiverdes were one of a whole host of clubs dragged into the relegation battle. And such woes appear to have taken their toll on Sarabia and his staff. Sarabia also reflected that “in day-to-day life you put the autopilot in survival mode” and that “after Sevilla he was very upset because those are things that cannot happen — leaving the team two games without a coach at the most important moment.”

Realising he would not match his father’s achievements, he worked in a local supermarket while studying engineering at his mother’s urging.

Born in Bilbao, Biscay, Basque Country, Sarabia only played amateur football during his entire career; he played for SD Indautxu, SD Leioa, SD San Pedro and Arenas Club de Getxo’s reserve team before retiring at the age of 24. He never played higher than the Tercera División. 

Sarabia transitioned to coaching in youth setups at clubs like Cruces and Danok Bat before joining Villarreal in 2011, where he managed their C team from 2013. He gained prominence as assistant to Quique Setién at UD Las Palmas (2015–2017), Real Betis (2017–2019), and Barcelona (2020), though his tenure at the latter ended amid reported tensions.

The departure of Sarabia came on the same day as Aleix Febas’s own farewell — one of the club’s most important midfielders also leaving. Aleix Febas, like Eder Sarabia, said goodbye to Elche and its supporters in a press conference. The Catalan midfielder communicated that he has decided not to renew and will leave the club. He assured that the reasons are not economic: “Yesterday we spent the whole day talking with Christian and Pedro about possibly continuing, but I believe that it is time to look for other challenges and to live experiences that here, at least momentarily, I cannot live.”
