## Why This Is a Historic Moment

This isn’t just a celebrity special — it’s a genuine milestone. For the first time in the Emmy-winning special’s history, the gala is bypassing traditional cable networks entirely and heading straight to streaming, bringing the celebration of Murphy’s five-decade career to Netflix’s massive global audience.

The **AFI Life Achievement Award**, established in 1973, is considered the highest honor in film — awarded annually to someone whose work has “stood the test of time” and fundamentally advanced the art of cinema. You can read more about its storied history on the [AFI Life Achievement Award Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI_Life_Achievement_Award).

Murphy joins an absolutely elite group. Recent recipients include Francis Ford Coppola (2025), Nicole Kidman (2024), Julie Andrews (2022), and Denzel Washington (2019) — with the award’s legacy stretching back to icons like Alfred Hitchcock, Bette Davis, and Sidney Poitier.

## Eddie Murphy & Netflix: A Match Already Made

This tribute feels completely natural given Murphy’s deep existing ties to the streamer. He delivered a Golden Globe-nominated performance as Rudy Ray Moore in the Netflix Original *Dolemite Is My Name*, starred alongside Jonah Hill in the hit comedy *You People*, and famously returned as Axel Foley in Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop revival.

Netflix and Eddie Murphy have been building something special together for years — and this tribute is the crown jewel of that partnership.
