Few fixtures in world football carry the weight of the Kolkata Derby, and this year’s script feels different. East Bengal head in as ISL 2025-26 champions, having pipped their bitter rivals to the title on the final matchday of the season — a result Mohun Bagan will be desperate to avenge. The Mariners, who finished runners-up in the ISL, will be eager to make a statement early in their Durand Cup campaign and continue their pursuit of a record-extending 18th title.

East Bengal’s recent title-winning momentum gives them a slight psychological edge, but Mohun Bagan’s squad depth and derby pedigree make this too close to call — a narrow margin or draw feels likely.
