Get ready for some really heart-breaking news for all gamers, After skipping 2020 due to COVID-19 and going digital-only in 2021, E3 was scheduled to return in 2022 with an in-person event. Unfortunately, the in-person comeback was cancelled in January due to Omicron concerns, and it now appears like the event has been cancelled entirely.

Will Powers, a representative for Razer, claims to have received an email stating that E3 has been cancelled. According to IGN’s sources, talks on a digital E3 were ongoing, but there was never any real impetus. The cancellation has yet to be officially announced by the Entertainment Software Association, which hosts E3.

Geoff Keighley swooped in soon after the news of E3’s cancellation leaked, announcing that his Summer Game Fest will come out in June with a “spectacular live kickoff performance.”

You certainly can’t accuse Geoff of being slow to react. Is this the end of E3? Has Summer Game Fest formally ascended to the throne as the most important summer gaming event? The ESA still intends to rally with another E3 in 2023, according to IGN, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
