## Rip’s Bold New Move — Working for the Enemy

This is the episode’s biggest jaw-dropper, and it’s one nobody saw coming.

Fresh off the tragic loss of their herd to hoof-and-mouth disease, Beth and Rip begin plotting their ascension back to the top — a plan that apparently includes Rip becoming the new foreman of the 10 Petal Ranch. Beulah is similarly surprised by Rip’s interest in the position, but because current foreman Chet is a terrible worker, she’s willing to entertain the notion.

Rip wastes no time weeding out the ranch’s bad seed, sending Chet packing as soon as another worker tells him what he believes Chet did to Wes. At dinner, Rip shares with Beulah that Chet is no longer employed. Beulah doesn’t blink — instead, she settles on a contract with Rip. He’s locked in.

But there’s a catch — Rip has also realised where the body he found came from and who it is. Now, the only question is why. [Show Snob](https://showsnob.com/dutton-ranch-season-1-episode-5-recap)

## Beth’s Dilemma — Rip’s Dream vs. Their Survival

Beth is struggling with the fact that Rip has to work at 10 Petal. She knows the ranch was Rip’s dream and his chance to finally be his own boss. [Show Snob](https://showsnob.com/dutton-ranch-season-1-episode-5-recap)

How long can this uneasy alliance last? Actor Marc Menchaca, who plays Rip’s new right-hand man Zachariah, says: “Based on Beth and Rip’s history, I don’t think it’s going to last long. I think they are going to have some leverage to wage a war — not to take over the Jacksons’ ranch, but to be on the path to making their own destiny.” [TVLine](https://www.tvline.com/2188270/dutton-ranch-season-1-episode-5-recap-beth-rip-plan-explained/)

## The Tragic Bloodshed — Dwight Is Gone

Carter finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time once again — and this leads to a tragic end for Dwight, who is shot to death by the cops. Meanwhile, a dangerous Chet, now armed with damaging information, doesn’t take warnings seriously — and Rob-Will shows up to confer with him, which can’t be good for anyone. This is exactly the kind of slow-burn [Western drama](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_(genre)) storytelling that made *Yellowstone* a cultural phenomenon — and *Dutton Ranch* is building its own compelling mythology episode by episode.
